Woodturnings: spalted curly maple wood hollow-turned vessel
Small Hollow Vessel
Spalted Curly Maple

Embellished with a small crease at the opening for visual effect, this delicately shaped but strongly patterned hollow turning was cut from a very small part of a relatively uninteresting log that was in someone's firewood pile. As a woodworker and artist who hates to waste anything, I'm glad that this piece was retrieved and worked on. Pleasant shapes and forms are influenced by past artisans and it is very satisfying to replicate this in this medium. The inside of small, thin-walled pieces such as this is removed while on the lathe by special cutting tools. The narrow opening through which the inside is turned often requires my custom-making the cutting implements myself. A simply-shaped but skillfully crafted turning for the discriminating collector.
